The Procurement Itch: 5 Signs You’re Ready for Something New

It happens to us all; a nagging feeling that it might be time for something new. Whether it’s a desire for fresh challenges, frustration with your current role, or curiosity about what else is out there. Sometimes the “procurement itch” can be worth exploring. But how do you know if it’s time for a change—or if staying where you are might be the smarter move?

Stalled Growth: If your current role isn’t offering opportunities to develop new skills, take on bigger challenges, or expand your influence, it could be time to look elsewhere.

Lack of Alignment: Misalignment between your personal values and your company’s priorities can lead to dissatisfaction. Are you passionate about sustainability, innovation, or perhaps technology - but feel these areas aren’t a focus in your organisation?

Boredom or Burnout: Feeling disengaged or consistently overwhelmed are both signs that your current job might not be a fit anymore.

Envy of Others' Opportunities: If you find yourself admiring peers in other companies or roles, it might indicate that you’re ready for a new challenge.

But before jumping ship it might be worth taking the time to reflect by asking yourself:

  1. What’s Missing? Identify specific aspects of your current job that leave you unfulfilled.

  2. Have I Tried to Change Things? Could you discuss any areas of challenge with your manager? Sometimes, new opportunities can be unlocked without leaving your organisation.

  3. What Do I Really Want? Define your priorities; whether it’s developing certain skills, taking on leadership, or finding better work-life balance.

Before deciding to move on, it’s also worth considering if staying where you are could bring the growth and fulfilment you’re looking for.

Growth Opportunities Exist: Are there upcoming projects or initiatives that align with your goals? For example, involvement in the transformation team or supporting the businesses ESG efforts which might provide you with fresh challenges.

Strong Relationships: Good working relationships with stakeholders, colleagues, and suppliers are invaluable. If these are already in place, they can make your job more rewarding and open doors to internal opportunities.

Supportive Leadership: Managers who invest in your development, offer mentorship, or champion your ideas can often help you achieve your goals without changing companies.

Stability and Reputation: If you’re in an organisation that’s well-respected and forward-thinking, leaving might mean giving up an advantage in your career and experiences.

Unexplored Internal Opportunities: Larger organisations often have roles in other departments, functions, or locations that could be a fit with your existing experience. These are areas that could be explored before considering a jump.

Expand Your Network: Collaborate with other teams or functions to gain new perspectives and opportunities.

After evaluation if you do feel that change is necessary, how do you decide where to go and what to do next?

  • Network Strategically: Reach out to peers in the procurement world to learn about opportunities.

  • Research the Market: Identify roles, industries, or companies that align with your skills and aspirations.

  • Update Your Skills: Strengthen your candidacy with certifications or specialised training.

  • Test the Waters: Attend industry events or webinars to explore trends and potential roles.

Deciding whether to stay or go is a significant decision. Sometimes, reigniting your passion for your current role can be just as fulfilling as moving on to a new one. If growth and alignment are within reach where you are, staying could be the smartest choice.

However, if opportunities for advancement are limited or you still feel there is misalignment, exploring a new role could be the fresh start you need.

Wherever you land, approach the decision thoughtfully, stay focused on your long-term goals, and make the choice that sets you up for success. Good luck :)
